6U Foundations · Ages 5–6
Every player’s first real season of baseball and softball. Fun, low-pressure, and built for kids who are just discovering the game.
6U Foundations is the entry point into La Crescent Youth Ball. It is designed for boys and girls, ages 5–6, who are just discovering baseball and softball. The goal is not competition — the goal is to make sure every kid finishes the season loving the game a little more than when they started.
Every session combines skills & drills with real scrimmage play. Kids learn to throw, catch, hit, and run bases — then immediately put those skills into a game-like scrimmage where every player bats every inning. No standings. No pressure. Just baseball.
Coaches at this level are trained to work with total beginners. Most 6U players have never picked up a glove before, and that is completely fine. We meet every kid where they are and celebrate every small win — the first catch, the first hit, the first successful throw to a teammate.
June 2 – July 16, 2026. Practices Tuesday & Thursday, 4:15–5:45 PM at Old Hickory Park (1110 Jonathan Lane, La Crescent).
Boys and girls playing together (co-ed). Players must be 6 years old (entering 1st grade) by March 1, 2026.
LYB t-shirt in the team color, batting helmets, and shared bats. Players bring a glove and wear cleats.

Throwing mechanics, fielding basics, bat contact, base running, and — most importantly — how to be part of a team.
Every session ends with high-fives and snacks. Kids leave smiling. That is the whole program in one sentence.
A typical 90-minute session
Every practice follows the same simple rhythm so kids know what is coming next. Predictability keeps them engaged and confident.
Light running, throwing partners, dynamic stretches. Coaches make sure everyone has water.
Throwing mechanics, fielding basics, hitting off a tee or soft toss, base running. Coaches rotate players through stations.
Modified game situations — 3 outs, coaches pitch, everyone bats every inning. Focus is on making contact, running bases, and having fun.
High-fives, snacks (parent-provided rotation), and a quick recap of what the kids learned.
Common questions
Everything parents ask before signing their 5- or 6-year-old up.
Absolutely — that is exactly who this program is for. Most 6U players are picking up a glove for the very first time. Our coaches are trained to work with total beginners.
You need a glove and cleats. LYB provides a team t-shirt, batting helmets, and shared bats. If you have a bat that fits, feel free to bring it; otherwise your kid can use one of ours.
Yes — 6U Foundations is co-ed. Kids this age are learning the fundamentals of the game together, and there is no separation into baseball vs softball tracks yet.
No problem. This is a low-pressure program — come when you can. There are no makeup practices or attendance penalties.
Each player receives an LYB t-shirt in their team color. The older divisions (8U+) get full uniforms; 6U keeps it simple.
No formal games — every session is a combined practice + intra-squad scrimmage. This lets kids play a lot of ball without the pressure of "the game on Saturday."
Talk to your coach. We would rather have your kid come for 20 minutes and go home smiling than stay for 90 minutes and hate baseball. Every kid moves at their own pace.
Registration for 2026 is open. Scholarship assistance is available for families with financial hardship — just check the box on the form and a board member will follow up privately.
