About 13U Baseball

13U Baseball is where La Crescent players begin their transition toward high school-level play. With 80-foot base paths and a 55-foot mound, the diamond starts to feel like what you see on TV. Arm strength and footwork must level up to match.

The doubleheader format on Tuesday evenings is intentional — two games at a stretch mirror what players will experience in high school and tournament settings. Managing energy, staying mentally locked in through two games, and recovering between games are real life skills coaches develop here.

Mound development is critical at 13U. Pitchers begin to differentiate their repertoire beyond fastball — off-speed pitches and location are coached. Catchers take on a leadership role calling pitches (with coach input) and managing the pitching staff. Metal spikes are allowed starting at 13U.

Pitch Count / Arm Protection

SRAA limit: 95 pitches per day (across both games combined). Rest rules: 1–20 pitches = 0 days rest; 21–45 pitches = 1 day rest; 46–60 pitches = 2 days rest; 61–75 pitches = 3 days rest; 76–95 pitches = 4 days rest. Pitchers appearing in game 1 count toward daily total.

Coach's Note

"The jump from 50 to 55 feet on the mound (and 60/65/70 to 80 feet on the bases) is often underestimated. Infield arm strength gaps show up fast. Run long-toss routinely through the first two weeks of the season. Pitch counts apply across the entire doubleheader — a pitcher who throws 60 in game 1 has only 35 remaining for game 2. Keep a running tally in the scorebook across both games."
